Headteacher’s letter

There is a vibrancy at Torriano Primary School which has an impact on all who visit. The school’s distinct atmosphere is a result of the combination of high aspirations, innovation and a relentless focus on excellence in all areas of the school.

Through our commitment to the Rights of the Child, we are passionate about young people’s learning and relish the challenge of guiding our children through the early stages of their lives. Torriano is an outstanding two-form entry primary school in Kentish Town, Camden. The culture of our school ensures that every child is known well and valued. We are a happy, ambitious and inclusive school reflecting the rich diversity of families in our area. It is a safe and stimulating environment for learning, playing and growing.

Torriano is a rights respecting community, which promotes active, global citizenship. We have an energetic and enthusiastic pupil voice, developed by a strong oracy curriculum. This champions the rights of learners and strives to provide a purposeful and learning climate. We believe that communication underpins cooperation and collaboration. Both must be taught and practised explicitly, in appropriate ways for all learners. Education builds the capacities of individuals to work together, to collaborate, to transform themselves, their communities, and the wider world.

Torriano is rooted in the heart of our community. We value strong relationships and partnerships, both with our families and also local and national organisations that enrich our curriculum. We are federated with Brecknock Primary School through Executive Headship and have established a strong commitment to excellence and equity in our local area. We share a growing professional learning community across the partnership, developing pedagogy, curriculum and innovation for everyone, through training, research and evidence informed practice. We have developed a team of expert and specialist teachers and leaders, who support and grow other professionals at a local and national level.

We specialise in science teaching, as a Primary Science Quality Mark Outreach school, our teachers have expert training. We have a state of the art, award winning Science Lab and Scientist in Residence from The Crick Institute, which helps to develop strong science capital for all at Torriano. We have a long standing commitment to primary careers education through our commitment to STEAM partnerships.

At Torriano we place a strong emphasis on creativity with a spotlight on performing and visual arts – including art, music, drama and dance. We offer an enriched curriculum where the children’s heritage is valued and celebrated.

At Torriano we are happy, have mutual respect and work hard. The physical and mental well being of all our children is equally valued, with prominence in the curriculum. We have a dedicated pastoral care team that ensures every child gets the support they need. Torriano has an expansive PE provision, which champions inclusive practice and leads to sporting success locally and regionally.

We are very proud of our children and the team who help them learn. We encourage any prospective families to visit us and experience the Torriano community first hand. We look forward to meeting you!
