Unicef Rights Respecting School

Torriano Primary School is a Gold Rights Respecting School, and this key principle underpins the whole school policy for promoting positive behaviour. A Rights Respecting School since 2009, we have advocated for global equality and campaigned on local and global issues, ensuring our children see themselves as part of a global family.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is the cornerstone of our whole school policy for promoting positive behaviour. The Convention is the most widely-ratified international human rights treaty in history.  It has 54 articles that cover all aspects of a child’s life and set out the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights that all children everywhere are entitled to. These rights describe what a child needs to survive, grow, and live up to their potential individual liberty. They apply equally to every child, no matter who they are or where they come from.

In teaching and learning, both in the classroom and in assemblies, children consider how some children are unable to access their rights, linking carefully to the Sustainable Development Goals. Through this lens, we also teach them about the five British values:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
